Shure DFR11EQ Version 5 Gains New and Improved Features

May 9, 1999

Capable of operating as a stand-alone unit or via PC control, Shure's DFR11EQ Version 5 Digital Equalizer/Feedback Reducer is equipped with new hardware and software which promises to enhance the performance of virtually any audio system.

Central among the unit's new features are the addition of a limiter function and a notable increase in delay time, each of which is controlled via separate windows within a redesigned software interface. Facilitating greater ease-of-use while providing a cleaner on-screen appearance, the software interface additionally provides individual control windows for the DFR11EQ's onboard digital feedback reducer, graphic EQ, and parametric EQ sections. A total of ten scenes can be stored within the device, all of which are accessible from the software interface. In addition, favorite scenes can be instantly recalled by using the units three new front panel controls. Of course, an unlimited number of scenes can be stored on the host computer.

The DFR11EQ Version 5 Digital Equalizer/Feedback Reducer features a 24 bit signal path, 20 bit A/D and D/A converters, a 48 kHz sampling rate, and an operable range extending from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. A powerful DSP processor governs the operations of the unit, and runs a proprietary algorithm that reduces feedback without a host PC by automatically identifying offending frequencies, and activating one of ten adaptive notch filters to bring the problem under control.

Internally, the device has feedback filters with faster reaction times, a new onboard limiter which supplies a higher level of sound system protection, and one-touch filter conversion. Activated by a button found within the software interface's control window, the one-touch conversion feature instantly transfers the unit's feedback-suppressing filters to the parametric filter bank. These ten feedback filters can then be reset to deal with any remaining problem frequencies. For the end-user, this means that a total of 20 filters can be deployed to help solve even the most extreme feedback conditions.

The DFR11EQ Version 5 Digital Equalizer/Feedback Reducer comes equipped with XLR and 1/4-inch input connectors, as well as independently-driven XLR and 1/4-inch outputs. UL approved, it meets all CUL, FCC, VDE, and CE requirements. System designers will also be pleased to learn that the unit is now controllable as a standard plug-in to SIA-Smaart® Pro 3.0 acoustic analysis software.
