Preliminary Design

March 25, 2004

Designed as a replacement for digital and analog tape-based portable recorders, the four-track 744T writes and plays audio files with bit depths of either 24 or 16 bit, with sample rates from 44.1 to 96 kHz, including pull-up sample rates, which can then be transferred to a computer via its FireWire port.

The 744T includes Sound Devices' next generation microphone preamplifiers, designed for high-bandwidth, high bit rate digital medium. In addition to the analog I/O, the unit also offers AES inputs and S/PDIF I/O. The 744T includes full timecode functionality, making it the perfect complement to both over-the-shoulder and cart-based audio-for-picture production. With the documentary and ENG mixing engineer in mind, the 744T very small, while still being feature-rich.

The 744T can take advantage of two different recording media (built-in 40GB 2.5" hard drive and Compact Flash) to suit your needs. The on-board battery is a standard Sony-compatible L- or M-type Lithium Ion cell. The also 744T easily connects with Windows and Mac OS computers via FireWire for audio data transfer and backup.

Sound Devices Expects to ship the 744T in late April or May, following NAB.
