Korg Z1 Synthesizer

Korg has announced the launch of the Z1 Multi-Oscillator Synthesizer for the U.S. The Z1 was previewed for the European market at this year's MusikMesse to widespread acclaim from editors, distributors and dealers alike.
The new Z1 elevates DSP synthesizer technology to new levels with the incorporation of Korg's advanced Multi-Oscillator Synthesis System (MOSS) which provides a wider range of sounds than any other DSP synth. The Z1 features 12 voices of built-in polyphony with an optional expansion board that boosts it to a formidable 18 voices. The new 61-note keyboard (with velocity and aftertouch sensing), is a DSP synthesizer based on a number of different sound-generating technologies. The Z1 features 256 programs and 32 multis (each combining up to six programs for split and layered sounds and multi-timbral playback); additional programs and multis can be saved to a PC FLASH ROM memory card via a built-in PC card slot.
For sound generation, Korg's innovative Multi-Oscillator Synthesis System (MOSS) offers an array of 13 types of oscillator algorithms, including both synthesis and imitative models such as brass model, plucked string model, drawbar, resonant, VPM (Variable Phase Modulation) synthesis, standard (analog), bowing string model, reed model, electric piano model, comb filter, oscillator synth, cross modulation and ring modulation. Up to two oscillators can be combined along with a sub-oscillator and a noise generator to create unique, hybrid sounds. MOSS is a technological breakthrough based on Korg's OAsys (Open Architecture Synthesis System) development platform.
The Z1 incorporates five (5) types of filters (with 2 filters per voice) which feature resonance, low-pass, highpass and a new bandpass mode that allows two center frequency points to be set simultaneously for prodigious sound-shaping possibilities. Dedicated parameter knobs for filter cutoff, resonance, EG intensity, Filter and Amp EG (ADSR) allow real-time sound control which realistically emulates an analog synthesizer. Four LFO's (syncable to MIDI clock) and polyphonic portamento allow for unique synth effects.
The Effects section features 12 high-quality, insert effects such as multi-tap delay, overdrive, wah, phaser, flanger, chorus and rotary speaker, plus three stereo Master effects: reverb (Hall or Room), and delay. All effects include real-time modulation capability and dual-band EQ is also available per program.
The Z1 includes an innovative polyphonic arpeggiator with five (5) preset patterns and fifteen (15) user-programmable ones which may be stored in internal memory. Performance data may be transmitted via MIDI to external sound sources and the arpeggiator will sync to incoming MIDI clock. Dedicated Gate, Velocity, Resolution and Speed knobs provide real-time control.
Along with Pitch Bend and Mod Wheels, the Z1 provides a number of more unique controllers like five Performance Editor (PE) knobs, which are assignable to numerous parameters. Up to four parameters may be assigned per knob for creative sound modulation possibilities. An exclusive X/Y vector touchpad is provided for a new level of expression far beyond a simple ribbon controller. Also included are two assignable switches and inputs for Damper, Volume and two assignable pedals. A large, easy-to-read LCD graphic display (640 x 64 dot) with pop-up menus makes the Z1 easy to work with, regardless of the performance environment.
Principal Z1 Options include: the polyphony expansion board (DSPB-Z1) for 6 additional voices and an ADAT optical digital interface which allows single-cable connectivity to any device that has an ADAT interface. For ultimate control, a wide selection of pedals are also available.
