Chordmaps.com Releases Interactive Music Theory Map

September 16, 2009

Chordmaps.com announces a new release of their Interactive Music Theory Map, an alternative MIDI controller which allows songwriters, music theory educators, and students to explore chords and progressions in all the major keys just by clicking their mouse. The new release adds many more chord choices to the map, including secondary chords (secondary dominants and diminished chords).

"Chordmaps.com Yours To Play It" is a computer-based music tool which allows the user to choose any major key and then click on many possible chord choices, hear the notes played using the MIDI sound capabilities of the computer, see the name of the chord, and also see which notes are being played on a virtual piano keyboard.

This program is part of an ongoing music education project authored by Steve Mugglin. Looking for ways to make the concepts of songwriting and chord progression easier for students to grasp, he began drawing maps, creating locations for the chords in a key, and then connecting the locations with arrows to indicate strong-sounding sequences.

The maps eventually became the basis for the website "Music Theory for Songwriters" (Chordmaps.com.), but the diagrams were silent. Now that the maps have become interactive, it's much easier to explore chords, listen to how they sound, and learn how they flow together.

The program is an educational resource for songwriters, music educators, and students (especially music theory students), and can be used by beginning musicians of all ages and abilities.
