DAW Buyer's Guide Goes On-Line

October 09, 2001

Those looking for comprehensive, up-to-date and unbiased information on digital audio workstations, disk-based multitracks and tapeless recorders, now have free online access to SYPHA's reference, The DAW Buyers Guide, at www.dawguide.com.

Visitors can browse through its entire database of over 200 listings, or search for specific products by application, system type, host platform, audio quality, replay channels, cost range, manufacturer and system name. The standardized terminology and format makes for easier comparisons between systems, and listings can even be printed out using a convenient print format.

The DAW Buyers Guide covers all types of DAW product, including turnkey systems, card/unit and/or software packages, disk-based multitracks and portable tapeless recorders. It covers the whole spectrum of audio recording and editing applications including semi-pro/project studio work, multitrack recording, editing, mixing and playback, post production for TV, video and film, radio production, field and location recording, editing and mastering for CD/DVD/SACD, and multimedia/Web content creation.

The DAW Buyers Guide aims to include not only every existing system, but those soon to be launched. The information provided takes the form of objective detailed listings gained from comprehensive questionnaires, and summary listings where detailed listings are not possible.

Detailed listings include target markets, hardware and software specifications, operational features, interfacing with external devices, recording, playback, editing and mixing capabilities, library management, networking and file transfer, compatibility and interchange, archiving and mastering, future development plans, customer support, typical configurations and costs, and suppliers details with live email and Web links.

In addition to the product listings, an explanation of the terminology is provided, as well as useful tips for potential purchasers.

Strict editorial control of the site is maintained by independent consultant SYPHA, and visitors may keep up to date with developments at the site, as well as other DAW-related news, by subscribing to the free SYPHAnews monthly newsletter.

Visitors to www.dawguide.com also have access to The NLE Buyers Guide. This was launched in April 2001 and covers the whole range of computer-based nonlinear video editing products, as well as disk recorders and servers aimed at video editing.
