Museum to Exhibit Earliest Electric Guitars

The Frying Pan

For three months beginning on September 5th, San Diegans will be able to view the prototype of the world's first commercially successful electric guitar, dubbed the "Frying Pan," as well as experience a complete sonic tribute to the electric guitar and the role it has played in shaping the sound of modern music.

The Museum of Making Music's the final segment of its guitar series, "StringFever–A Century of Guitar Fascination" is titled "Eclectic Electric," and presents the sights and sounds of the electric guitar and its extensive musical vocabulary. It features the evolution of the electric guitar through a series of interactive exhibits, guest artists and historical artifacts, including the star attraction the changed the face of music making: the Frying Pan.

The Frying Pan exhibition marks the second time the public will have the opportunity to view this historic piece (and the first time the Frying Pan has ever been publicly displayed in its native Southern California.) Its debut was at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in 1996. Normally, it resides beyond the public eye at the Rickenbacker International Corporation's factory in Santa Ana.
