Elation Introduces 12-Channel 20-Amp Rack-Mount Dimmer Pack

January 14, 2009

Elation Professional is helping lighting designers dial the lights down low — and their budgets even lower! — with its new RMD-1220 12-channel rack-mount dimmer. Serving up 20 amps per channel, the RMD-1220 is a larger version of the company's successful RMD-1210 10-amp dimmer with more load capacity and features, making it an ideal dimming solution for large stage shows, concerts, tours and productions.

"We were getting a lot of requests for a 20-amp dimmer, so we developed the RMD-1220," said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. "At 20 amps per channel, users can hook up a bigger load to each channel, so they can control either more fixtures or higher wattage ones. We also added some brand-new features, while keeping the price tag surprisingly affordable."

Among the new features found on the RMD-1220 is compatibility with ArtNET or Ethernet protocol. The pack comes equipped with an ArtNET connection, allowing it to be controlled via this new, ultra-fast means of data transmission. For those who prefer to use a standard DMX-512 controller, the flexible RMD-1220 also offers 3- and 5-pin DMX connections.

Thanks to its substantial 99-scene internal memory, the RMD-1220 can also be run on its own without an external controller. Up to 99 scenes can be programmed into the pack and called up directly from the unit for playback, quickly and conveniently — no other controller required.

The RMD-1220 gives operators more pinpoint control over dimming, too. This is because the dimmer utilizes upgraded dual 50-amp SCRs (Silicon Controlled Rectifiers) on each channel, resulting in an impressive rise time of about 350 microseconds.

Another very useful feature is the RMD-1220's DMX Fail Backup, which allows users to pre-select what the dimmer should do if a DMX signal is ever lost or interrupted. For example, you can select the function "HOLD" and the pack will hold the last memory before the signal was lost. Or you can select "GO SCENE" and it will automatically play a pre-selected scene in the event of a DMX failure.

Other features on the RMD-1220 include: selectable dimmer curves (Linear, Square and Non-Dim); individual and block channel patching, real time zero crossing detection, and local onboard intensity control. Users have the flexibility to connect the RMD-1220 for either single-phase or 3-phase operation.

Designed for easy operation, the RMD-1220 features a 16-digit, 2-line LCD menu display that makes it quick and convenient for operators to perform such functions as set up DMX addresses, select the output and dimmer curve for each channel, and play scenes manually. The display also gives the pack's internal temperature, which can be controlled via the unit's dual cooling fans with 3 selectable speeds (Normal, Full On and Silent).

"With its many premium features, the RMD-1220 offers an amazing dollar value for a 12-channel 20-amp dimmer pack," said Loader. The MSRP of the RMD-1220 is $2,799.95.
