HarmonyCentral Auctions Becomes Marketplace

May 14, 2000

The world’s largest musician community, having launched a huge music gear auction in February, is raising the standard. Musicians can now get price quotes on music gear from a network of dealers, bid for lessons, repairs, and other services, as well as buy and sell their used gear. Dealers can sign up for these services for free for a limited time. The relaunched site also has a new name: HarmonyCentral Marketplace (marketplace.harmony-central.com).

"With Auctions, we changed how musicians bought and sold used and rare gear," said Brian Hageman, HarmonyCentral’s Director of Brokered Services. "Today HarmonyCentral MarketPlace changes everything about music retail. Whether you sell new or used gear or provide music-related services like lessons or repairs, Marketplace can help you do it better."

On Auctions, a simple interface lets you upload single or bulk listings and customized features let dealers create their own auction homepage. And since Auctions is a member of the FairMarket Network(SM), products are automatically listed on sites like MSN, Lycos and VH-1. Plus, HarmonyCentral’s qualified traffic of 1.5 million musicians per month, along with the industry’s lowest transaction fees, add to the site’s appeal.

PriceFind gives dealers the chance to pick and choose from highly qualified customer price requests and ServiceFind lets dealers take bids on previously underutilized revenue sources such as repairs, music lessons and rentals. Both PriceFind and ServiceFind are free to dealers for a limited time. Fixed price gear sales happen at Classifieds, where all of the listings are free – an obvious advantage for dealers over traditional print classifieds.

To the musician, it means a whole new way to shop. The new features unleash the power to get real-time quotes simultaneously from a network of dealers, insuring the right product or service at the right price.

"With the new additions, Marketplace couldn’t be simpler or more powerful," said Hageman. "Just go to the site and sign up for the service. Once you are online, you’re literally just a few minutes away from giving yourself the chance to get price quotes and business from new leads."

HarmonyCentral went live from an MIT dorm room in 1994, and now has more than 14 million monthly page views. In 1999, HarmonyCentral merged with music gear e-tailer zZounds.com to form HarmonyCentral.com. The combined sites have over 15,000 pages of content. The sites operate independently under the parent corporation of HarmonyCentral.com, Inc. Vulcan Ventures Inc., the investment organization of Paul G. Allen, provided lead funding. Also participating in the first funding round were Zilkha Venture Partners and several angel investors.
