January 14, 1999

After discussing the creation of a signature amp over several years, guitarist Steve Vai and Carvin have teamed up in an attempt to create an amp that not only sounds great, but is rugged enough to handle the rigors of extensive touring, as well as affordable. The result of this collaboration: the Legacy head and combo. Steve Vai is very discriminating when it comes to tone, and the tube and electronic circuitry were only approved after repeated listening tests. The testing continued with dozens of different enclosures and speakers. When the final selections were made, the Celestion G12M-25 "Greenback," a reissued design of the original 60's Greenback speakers, came out on top. Steve was also involved when it came to the appearance of the Legacy, selecting the color scheme and designing the logo. The Legacy is being offered in a 100W head format and 2x12 combo (list prices of $1599 and $1995 respectively.) Two 4x12 cabinet designs are also available for full or half stack configurations (each with a list price of $1195), as well as a 2x12 extension cabinet (which lists at $329.) Carvin is now taking orders their web site at www.carvin.com with the head model going for $799.95, while the combo is sold direct at $969.95, with complete full and half stack packages available as well. Steve Vai is using the Legacy to record his new album and should begin touring this Summer. Carvin will be posting some audio clips of Steve Vai putting the Legacy through its paces soon as well.
