Sennheiser Unveils New Stereo Shotgun Mic

February 11, 2003

Sennheiser will formally introduce its new MKH 418S compact M-S stereo shotgun microphone at the National Association of Broadcasters NAB 2003 convention in April. Based on the legendary MKH 416, a short shotgun microphone that has long been the standard for outside broadcast and film production work, the MKH 418S pairs Sennheiser's RF condenser microphone technology with a dual-capsule M-S stereo design to provide a truly unique solution for field recording specialists.

The MKH 418S not only works in mono but it also provides directional information, future-proofing recordings for their subsequent use in stereo mixes. The MKH 418S M-S stereo shotgun incorporates a mid capsule from the industry standard MKH 416, combined with a newly designed figure-of-eight side capsule system. Mid-side (M-S) stereo allows the adjustment of stereo imaging through the use of an independent dual-capsule system. The independent capsule outputs of the MKH 418S support variable matrixing capabilities and multi-functional use in post-production. The output connector is a standard five-pin XLR male, and the microphone is powered via 48-volt phantom supplied to each capsule.

The MKH 418S is built to withstand harsh outdoor conditions. The matte black finished brass body is rugged and weather-resistant while the low-impedance, RF-type MKH capsules are ready for extreme climate conditions.

The new compact microphone incorporates Sennheiser's exclusive RF condenser technology, facilitating quality M-S stereo field recording in a wide variety of applications, at a fraction of the cost of a combination system. The Sennheiser MKH 418S M-S stereo shotgun microphone has a list price of $1,595 including case and user manual.
