September 08, 2006

On Monday, September 11 at 7 PM, jazz guitarist Joe Beck will give a special intimate performance at the Museum of Making Music. Featuring Bob Magnusson on bass, Beck's show, "That Reminds Me," features musical anecdotes and personal stories spanning Beck's 40-year career of playing with some of music's greatest legends.

Beck is well known for being the first guitarist for jazz musician Miles Davis and has recorded with an impressive collection of artists including Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, James Brown and numerous others. He has composed music for TV and film and was honored by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences five times with their Most Valuable Player Award.

Since the late 80s he has recorded many albums and has kept himself busy through teaching, master classes, concerts and jazz gigs. His latest CD, "Just Friends," comes from the Joe Beck Trio featuring Mark Egan and Danny Gottlieb. Beck appears at the Museum thanks to the generosity of The Martin Guitar Company.

Bassist Bob Magnusson is not only a local favorite, but also a noted string bass teacher. His extensive studio work on jazz recordings, television spots, film scores and jingles, includes a personal discography of over 150 albums. Magnusson was a faculty member of Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA from 1977 to 1996 and in 1998 he joined the faculty at San Diego Mesa Community College and the Coronado School of the Arts.
