Museum of Making Music Kicks Off Music Series With Chris Montgomery Jazz Quartet And Opens Glenn Miller Exhibit

March 01, 2007

The Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad,CA is proud to share a special musical event on Saturday, March 3 at 1pm, featuring the Chris Montgomery Jazz Quartet and their special guest and Grammy® nominee, Jens Lindemann on trumpet. The concert, which kicks off the Coastal Communities Music Series, is free and offers a chance to experience jazz improvisation from a true trumpet virtuoso and one of the nations finest jazz quartets.

This is only the second time that these musicians have played together 'live', and will no doubt leave listeners begging for one more tune. Last year's concert was filled to capacity and unfortunately, had to turn away nearly 100 music lovers.

Formally the lead trumpet with the world-renowned Canadian Brass, Lindemann is widely known as one of the finest trumpet soloists in North America. He has played in almost every major concert venue in the world including the Philharmonics of New York, Los Angeles, London, Manchester, Munich and even the Great Wall of China.

Classically trained at the Julliard School in New York, Lindemann has performed or recorded with classical stars such as Sir Angel Romero, Doc Severinsen and Charles Dutoit. He is internationally endorsed by Yamaha and performs exclusively on 24K gold plated trumpets. Currently, he resides in Los Angeles and teaches at UCLA.

The Chris Montgomery Quartet features Chris Montgomery on guitar, Lynn Willard on keyboard and piano, John Hurst on bass and Roger Friend on drums. The concert will include some of the best-loved standards from the Great American Song Book as well as classic jazz standards.

Don't miss your chance to witness this memorable jazz concert. There is a $5 suggested donation.

Also, through May 7, 2007, The Museum is home to a display of various personal items commemorating the life of Glenn Miller, one of the most important icons of 20th century American music.

Glenn Miller was a legendary musician and band leader who contributed greatly to the Swing Era with his unique "Miller Sound." The museum display includes original photographs, personal items, posters, and other memorabilia loaned to the museum by the Glenn Miller family. The prominent object on display is the first Gold Record ever presented to an artist. It was awarded to Glenn Miller by RCA in February 1942 celebrating 1,200,000 sales of "Chattanooga Choo Choo," the featured song and dance scene in the 1941 film Sun Valley Serenade. The award began a tradition in the recording industry that continues to this day. This is a rare opportunity to explore the history of Glenn Miller and his era and to see original artifacts in this temporary exhibition.

Miller disappeared during World War II while flying over the English Channel on his way to Paris after its liberation in 1944. The reporters who have sought the mystery of his disappearance may have overlooked, however, an even bigger mystery–that of the power of the Glenn Miller Sound.

On Saturday, March 17 at 4 p.m., the museum will explore this mystery through a multimedia historical presentation - Glenn Miller: A Celebration of His Big Band Sound. For the first time, recorded interviews with several of Miller's sidemen will be presented along with band footage and rare photographs. Among those represented are Tex Beneke, Billy May and Frankie Carle, as well as personal appearances by Miller's daughter Jonnie, and longtime trombonist Paul Tanner. Join facilitator and historian Dan Del Fiorentino at 4 p.m. for an afternoon of music and discussion as we uncover the secrets of the "Miller Sound" with those who knew him best. This event is free, though a $5 suggested donation is appreciated.
