On-Line Music Production/Recording Classes

October 27, 1999

Music Production and Recording 100. Written by recording engineer Jack Wall, the class is for people with minimal recording experience who need to know studio setups, what to buy, how to connect, how to record, how to create a basic mix, and how to burn a CD.

By the end of the 12-lesson class, an online student will have recorded three basic projects: MIDI only, live, and hybrid (a combination of live/MIDI). They will have learned about speakers, mics, amps, direct boxes, signal flow on an analog mixing board using the Mackie 32-8 bus board as a model, signal flow in a virtual mixing board (using Logic and Cubase VST as models), how to zero the board, and setting up their system for recording and playback using downloadable .wav or aiff files. The class is flexible enough to work with 4-track recorders, Roland VS1680, and, digital audio software like Cakewalk, Cubase, and Emagic.

Academically, Music Production and Recording 100 is comparable to a workshop since it can be completed in 30 days or less.

Wall's engineer/mixing credits for film include Basquiat (Dennis Hopper and David Bowie), Somewhere in the City (Sandra Bernhardt), House of America (1997 Sundance entry), and Rhinoceros Hunting in Budapest (1997 Sundance entry). He also was music editor and mixer on the soundtrack to Jason's Lyric with artist Taj Mahal. Wall's composing/sound design credits include a PC-CDROM game of the Nickelodeon TV series, Animorphs(currently in production), and Vigilance. He recently completed the musical score for "Journey to Infinity" at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. Other compositions can be heard at Disney's DisneyQuest (theme park), and a score for a documentary entitled Warzone, which premiered in the main competition at the Berlin Film Festival in February 1998.
