Peace Drum Debuts Five New Snare Drums
March 01, 2007
Advertisement Five new snare drums were debuted at Winter NAMM by Peace Drum. Add bubinga to a line that already includes maple, birch, brass, copper, steel, aluminum, and phosphor bronze shells. First up, the SD-522 is a 10-lug, 5.5" x 14" gleaming black lacquered maple snare with laminated maple hoops; hoops are offered in contrasting natural or consonant gloss black. Lugs are offset, and shells are vented with a 10mm chrome eyelet. For a completely different sound and look, the SD-523 is a 10-lug, 8" x 14" maple snare with unique appointments: its maple hoops are thinner, more like wooden bass drum hoops, and their profile is lower over the head. Offset die-cast bass drum claws affix the hoop to the deep shell, and this design adds another syllable to the lexicon of the drum: rim shots can be articulated on the wood hoop or directly on the claw. With its deep shell, the SD-523 puts out lots of low end and warmth - and enough projection for larger venues. Next, the SD-524 is a 5.5" x 13" maple snare, a less common size with an uncommonly attractive and musical sound. The 524 uses Peace's coveted micro-tube lugs, mounted to the 9-ply shell in an offset pattern. The rims are triple-flanged 2.3mm hoops. The SD-525 is similar to the SD-524, but it measures a deeper 7" x 13". Any lacquer finish is available as a special order on the various maple shell snare drums. Several sample finishes were displayed at the trade show, including a sparkle lacquer, a lacquer fade, and a lacquer burst. The SD-526 is a more typical shell size at 5.5" x 14", but the shell is 100% bubinga, 9 plies worth. Bubinga is a very hard, dense wood - hard to work with but packing a powerful sound with deep, punchy lows and silky highs. Its natural finish is enhanced with a floral inlay pattern. Prices TBA.
