Rees JazzBox Guitar Offers Jazz Tones with Longer Sustain and Feedback Resistance

June 08, 2009

The Rees JazzBox guitar, made in Cambridge, England has a smooth full rich jazz tone that is created by the combination of a semi-hollow arch-top body with a traditional rosewood bridge. This guitar provides the fine tone of traditional arch-top guitars, but now with longer sustain, and much greater resistance to feedback due to the solid center of the body. The Seymour Duncan pickups: a Jazz humbucker and a vintage P90; together with Rees wiring, provide a wide range of voices. The neck pickup is pure smooth traditional jazz humbucker voice. The bridge pickup of vintage P90 character provides the bright more aggressive gritty tones of the earliest electric arch-tops. Rees switching uses a conventional 3-way neck — both — bridge pickup selector, enhanced by an original 3-way rotary switch to optionally change the voice of the bridge pickup by adding a coil of the humbucker in or out of phase. The result is a guitar that can go all the way from traditional and modern jazz, to funk to progressive rock. With a fine valve amp cranked up this guitar can take you where no old arch-top would still function. Sound recordings are on the web-site.

Because the bridge floats it can be quickly and simply replaced when changing strings. Not only you have the tonal choice of tape-wound or round-wound strings. You can change between any of four bridges: rosewood for warm jazz tone; ebony for bright jazz tone; bone for warm rock tone; metal tune-o-matic for rock tone.

The body is stained by rubbing by hand, which brings out the full beauty of the fine wood figuring, rather than by spraying which would obscure the wood grain. The body is finished in a combination of thin acrylic, oil and wax, to provide reasonable durability together with best resonance and tone. The neck is usually finished in high-tech polymer lacquer for hard wearing, with a fast action satin finish to the back of the neck. A choice of body colours is available: natural korina (as pictured); golden korina; amber sunburst; tobacco 3-tone sunburst ; dark cherry sunburst; stripy black; dark cherry red.
