E-MU Launches SoundFont.com Web Site

September 10, 2001

E-MU, a division of Creative Technology Ltd., announced the launch of SoundFont.com, a new, independent web site focused on the SoundFont format of downloadable sound technology used in the popular Sound Blaster Live! , AWE 32, AWE 64, Audigy, and E-MU APS and E-card sound cards. The site features news and information on SoundFont technology, as well as the opportunity to download SoundFont banks over the web. The web site URL is: www.soundfont.com.

SoundFont technology is similar to the concept of digital photography, such that any sound that exists in the world can be captured using a SoundFont-compatible card from Creative or E-MU. Utilizing a technology called "sampling", SoundFont-compatible cards can playback any sound using the sampling synthesizer resident on the sound card. This technology is similar to digital photography in the sense that a captured sound can be manipulated using audio editing software, and then played back using MIDI software. New sounds, or "banks" can be downloaded from the site directly into your computer.

"SoundFont technology is very similar to what is used by professional musicians and sound designers in the creation of film sound tracks and sound effects designs" states Don Scott, President of E-mu Systems. "The fact that every AWE, SB Live, Audigy, APS, or E-card sound card from E-MU or Creative is also a very high quality digital sampling instrument means that you can make great music right from your desktop without having to spend a lot of money".

"Imagine being able to download a complete symphony into your computer, or playing a 9 foot grand piano that would cost over six figures to own" comments Tim Swartz, Director of Sound Development for E-MU. "SoundFont banks have the power to turn your computer's sound card into a complete digital sampling system and MIDI studio that is suitable for learning to play keyboards as well as composing intricate, professional sounding musical works" he adds.

With an installed based millions of cards, and widespread acceptance including adoption by Microsoft and Apple, SoundFont technology turns any sound card into a digital sampling instrument capable of creating professional quality music.

SoundFont technology is part of the EAX suite of audio processing technologies developed by E-MU Systems for Creative and E-MU sound cards. The SoundFont format has achieved widespread acceptance as the standard for computer-based music making, punctuated by Apple's recent adoption of SoundFont technology for use as the resident sound rendering technology inside of the OSX operating system as well as adoption of a SoundFont MIDI synthesizer inside the popular Quicktime multimedia authoring software.
