Minnetonka Surround Encoding Software Coming

Advertisement Minnetonka Audio Software’s new SurCode can be used to make Surround Sound disks for playback in home theater systems. “Finally, the Surround Sound recording artist has a medium for distributing their work,” said Minnetonka President John Schur. “SurCode lets the artist take advantage of the fact that there are millions of home theater systems already in place, with Surround Sound.” SurCode for DTS ® Digital Surround accepts a Surround Sound mix as 6 .wav files, from any source. SurCode creates a DTS-encoded file in a .wav format, which can be burned onto a CD-R or CD-RW as an audio CD. This disc can then be played on any home theater system that has a DTS decoder. DTS decoders have become a standard on home theater equipment. Minnetonka will also sell a version of SurCode for Dolby ® Digital. The Dolby Digital encoder also accepts 6 .wav files, and can output either an .ac3 file or a Dolby-encoded .wav file. A special interface to SurCode is built into Minnetonka’s Mx51 Surround Sound Authoring program. When a Surround mix is completed, the project can be submitted for conversion to a 6-track master, in a single step. In one more step, the 6-track master can be submitted for DTS or Dolby encoding. “Minnetonka is integrating the tools to make Surround mixing easy,” says Schur. “Our goal is to eliminate all the confusion about how to work with Surround Sound, and to get artists and recording engineers introduced to the joys of Surround.
