Metasonix Announces New Tube Processor

November 16, 1999

Metasonix has introduced an interesting new tube-based signal processor, the TS-21 Hellfire Modulator, that could be a very powerful tool for warping, twisting, and otherwise mangling audio waveforms. The TS-21 would be right at home with a modular synth and useful for sound design, but can be used with any audio signal you choose.

The TS-21 consists of three processing circuits:

  • A pentode tube preamp, which can also be used as a VCA, allowing integration with modular synthesizers
  • A unique all-tube pulse-width modulation circuit, which uses positive feedback to achieve metastable operation - it can be used to "sharpen" pulse waveforms, or to add bursts of noise to waveforms
  • Finally, a very unique distortion/analog switch based on an obscure television tube called a "Sheet-Beam Modulator". This circuit allows adjustable distortion, plus adjustable waveform folding, plus the ability to convert a monophonic audio signal into a stereo signal (the two outputs provide slightly different distortion effects simultaneously). Yes, that's right, TS-21 has a monophonic input and a stereophonic output.

The beam modulator has a built-in LFO - it can be enabled to switch the output signal back and forth between the two outputs at adjustable rates of from 1 Hz to about 15 Hz.

The TS-21 use more readily-available tubes for ease of maintenance, and is handmade in the USA. It comes packaged in a two space rackmount case, and carries a one year warranty, including tubes.
